  • Flex Spending Accounts
  • Parental Leave
  • Employee Assistance

What Is WMATA’s Recruitment Process?

Application

To apply you will need to create an account on the WMATA website. You can select several jobs to apply for at once. Once you have created an account you can upload your resume and fill out the application information.

WMATA’s Psychometric Tests

Before you are interviewed, you will have to complete skills and behavioral assessments. These are used to make sure you have the ability to properly learn all aspects of the job. You also need to show that you have a work ethic and temperament that are compatible with the demands of the position.

  • The Bennett Mechanical Test
The Bennett Mechanical Test, also called the BMCT is used for those who need to show some understanding of physics, mechanics, and spatial reasoning. The BMCT is made up of 55 multiple-choice questions. You will have 25 minutes to answer as many questions as you can. The test will measure your mechanical understanding, ability to figure out how things work, and your understanding of basic physics. Force, velocity, and fluid mechanics are 3 of the physics concepts you will need to be familiar with.
  • Personality Test
The personality test is a multiple-choice questionnaire. You will either need to rank your responses from 1-5 as most to least likely or pick words from choices that you are given that best describe you. Your answers are then compared to a model profile that has been made for your position of choice.
  • Other Tests
Depending on the position there may be other tests you are required to take. These can include numerical and verbal reasoning, situational judgment tests, and job-specific tests. Bus drivers and train operators are two of the positions that will require job-specific testing.

Interviews

The WMATA interview process is very brief. If your assessment scores are suitable, you will be contacted to schedule a phone interview. The phone interview will focus on your resume and background. If the phone interview goes well you will be contacted to schedule an in-person interview. The interview will be either one on one or a panel interview. On some occasions, group interviews may be held instead of individual interviews. The questions will be job-specific, and you will need to be ready with examples of your experience and background.

How to Prepare for WMATA’s Assessment Tests?

When applying for a job with WMATA be sure to study for any tests you may encounter. Train operators and bus drivers who are new to the job will be given a training course prior to testing. Be sure to also study for the BMCT. Find a resource to study basic physics and re-familiarize yourself with the concepts. There are apps and websites designed to help people study physics. Study the ideas behind simple machinery, and learn how it works, so you can apply what you know to the test, and demonstrate some mechanical knowledge.

The personality tests may seem like the lowest priority. It is important to take these as seriously as any skills-based or mechanical tests. When answering the questions, give an honest assessment of yourself. Keep your professional behavior in mind, since this may influence your answers.
