What Is Con Edison?

Con Edison is a United States-based, investor-owned energy company. Its headquarters are located in New York City, and they provide energy services in the New York Metropolitan area, Westchester County New York, and portions of  northern New Jersey. The Con Edison team is made up of almost 15,000 people. There are opportunities for skilled tradespeople, corporate office positions for business professionals, and engineering careers. What Is Con Edison’s Recruitment Process?

Con Edison jobs are divided into general groups to simplify your search. Once you find a job that seems like it will be right for you, take a look at the required qualifications to make sure you meet all of them. Ideally, you will also meet at least a few of the preferred qualifications. Your application will be reviewed, and if you seem like a good match, you will be called for a telephone interview. This interview is a basic screening interview to verify the information you have provided and get an idea of how your personality will be a good fit. This is a good chance for you to ask any questions you have about the job. Testing is required for most positions, and you will be told if you will be required to take any tests. Depending on the position you may have physical aptitude tests in addition to online mental aptitude tests. If your test scores are acceptable, you will be contacted for a face-to-face interview. You may have a series of interviews ranging from one on one to panel interviews. The whole process may be done in one day or spread over several.

Con Edison’s Pre-Employment Tests

As a member of the EEI, Edison Electric Institute, Con Ed uses standardized training materials and employment tests provided by EEI. EEI has developed test batteries that evaluate the skills necessary for each position.

EEI CAST Test

Lineworkers and other skilled tradesmen with utility companies can expect to be given The CAST (Construction and Skilled Trade Selection System). This is a battery of tests made up of 4 sections.

• Graphic Arithmetic- You will be given 2 drawings to use to solve a series of 26 arithmetic questions. It is a multiple-choice test, and you will have a 30-minute time limit.
• Mechanical Concepts Assessment – This is a test of your understanding of basic mechanical concepts. You will need to answer questions about basic systems involving gears, pulleys, and levers. There is a 20-minute time limit to complete all 44 questions.
• Reading For Comprehension – This section has 32 multiple-choice questions about the information in 4 short passages. The passages will generally consist of information about power industry safety. You will have 30 minutes to complete this test.
• Mathematical Usage – There are 18 multiple-choice arithmetic questions. You will have 30 minutes to complete this section.

EEI POSS/MASS Test

This is a combined test for those going into plant maintenance and for plant operators.

• Reading Comprehension – You will be given 5 passages to read. There will be 36 follow-up questions about the information in these passages. The questions are multiple-choice, and you will have 30 minutes to complete the test.
• Mathematical Usage – There will be either 18 or 46 arithmetic questions on this test. The number of test questions depends on the level of position you have applied for. You have a time limit of 7 minutes to complete the 18 question test. For the 46 question test, you will have 17 minutes.
• Mechanical Concepts – You will have 44 questions involving problems in basic machinery systems. The questions will be presented with drawings of gears, levers, and pulleys so you can find the problem in the system and determine the correct course of action from the multiple options given. There will be a 20-minute time limit.
• Tables and Graphs – This section has 2 portions involving tables and graphs, The first section has a 5-minute time limit to answer 60 questions. The other is 24 questions with a 5 minutes time limit.
• Spatial Ability (Figurative Reasoning) – Here, you will have 20 questions to answer about diagrams of disassembled machinery. You will be asked questions about what different pieces do, how they are supposed to be put together. You will have 10 minutes to complete this section.

EEI TECH Test

The TECH  (technical operations assessment system) test is focused on new graduates who have applied for entry-level positions in the power industry. There are 4 short sections designed for graduates from mathematical engineering, chemistry, and mechanical engineering programs.

• Reasoning From Rules – You will have 9 minutes to answer 9 multiple-choice questions about solving logic network problems
• Graphic Problem Solving – You will have 21 arithmetic problems to solve using a drawing. You will have a 19-minute time limit.
• Interpreting Diagrams – This section shows how well you are able to interpret symbols on a diagram. You will have 9 questions that you will need to answer by figuring out what the symbols on a diagram mean. You will have about 1 minute to answer each question since there is a 9-minute time limit.
• Mechanical Concepts – You will need to demonstrate that you have some mechanical ability. This test is made up of pictures representing a mechanical problem. You will need to identify the problem in each picture and choose the correct answer from the choices given. There will be pictures representing a mechanical issue. There will be 44 questions you will need to answer in 20 minutes.

Physical Tests

If you will be working as a lineman, machine operator, or any other highly physical role, you may need to take a battery of physical tests. These can involve pushing and pulling strength, and other motions that are necessary for performing daily duties.

How To Prepare for Con Edison’s Assessments?

The EEI tests are standard throughout the majority of the utility industry in the United States, so there are plenty of resources available to you. If you took any EEI courses as part of your licensing, then the materials you used for your course are an excellent study guide. EEI members like Con Edison also make study materials available to their candidates. If you are newly licensed, the test subjects may still be fresh in your mind. Do not let this prevent you from studying for pre-employment tests.

Other ways you can study are to make sure you practice your basic arithmetic skills. Try to increase your problem-solving speed by solving proactive problems with a time limit. Review basic machinery and schematics so you are confident that you still remember how to read them and correct any problems you might see.
