What Is NiSource?

NiSource is a fully regulated power company headquartered in Merrillville, Indiana. They provided electrical and natural gas services in 6 states, operating through the local brands Columbia Gas and NIPSCO. NiSource utility services are available in Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Indiana.

As one of the largest fully-regulated utility companies in the U.S, NiSource supports a large workforce of over 8,000 employees. What Is NiSource’s Recruitment Process?

Open positions at NiSource and its subsidiary companies are listed on the NiSource careers site. To apply, create an account so you can save your resume and use it to autofill any applications you submit. Some positions at NiSource require pre-employment testing. You will be notified if you are required to take any tests.

If you seem like a good candidate, you will be contacted for a telephone interview. This is a basic screening interview where your interest in the position will be queried, and the interviewer will get your relevant background information. At this time an in-person interview may be scheduled. Your in-person interview may be a panel interview with several managers. Depending on the position you are being considered for, you may have 2 or more interviews.

If you seem like the perfect fit, you will be given a conditional offer. A background check will be conducted, and some positions may require a physical. Once you have met all the conditions you will be given a start date and will officially be hired.

 

NiSource’s Psychometric Tests

As a requirement for some positions, NiSource requires the completion of some aptitude and personality tests. Those going into positions in Operations are the most likely to be tested. The tests do not require specialized knowledge, but they are designed to assess that you have the minimum skills needed to learn and perform the job. You can take these tests from your home computer or laptop, provided you have a webcam so the tests can be proctored.

 

If you have applied for a position in operations, these are two of the tests you will be given:

  • Operations Job Fit Analysis – This is a personality questionnaire that helps determine your attitude toward safety, inclusion, employee relations, and compliances. It is given to help ensure that those holding positions in operations share the company views.
  • Aptitude TestThis test focuses on areas that are important to success in operations positions. You will be assessed in reading comprehension, basic mathematical skills, mechanical comprehension, and logical decision-making. The questions are multiple-choice. The questions do not require specialized job knowledge but instead focus on general skills.

 

How to Prepare for NiSource’s Assessments?

You will have advanced notice of the required tests. This means you have a chance to prepare for them so you can do your best. Areas that are important to focus on are reading comprehension and basic arithmetic.

You can practice reading comprehension by reading a short article and having prepared questions to answer at the end, with the help of apps, and by identifying the main points of the article and writing them down. Practice your math skills using flashcards and practice problems so you can be confident without a calculator.

The logic/sound decision-making section of the test simply relies on you being able to make decisions that are based on safety for both you and the customer. These questions are a little harder to prepare for but rely on a good idea of job best practices and situational judgment.
