Amazon Operations Management Virtual Job Tryout

If your experience and background is the right fit for the position of operations manager, you will be emailed a link to the Virtual Job Tryout. This assessment takes around 45 minutes. It is made up of two parts, the Work-Style Assessment, and the Work-Sample Simulation. The Work-Style Assessment is a personality type test, and the Work-Sample Simulation will show the skills you need to display for job success.

Work-Sample Simulation

The Work-Sample Simulation focuses on 3 separate skills. These are the areas in which you need to excel to be an effective operations manager.

  • Team Leading Scenarios – This section will focus on your decision-making and leadership skills. It is made up of 8 situational judgment questions. Each scenario is based on a challenge that you may face as an operations manager. You will have 4 solutions to choose from, and you will be asked to select which option is the best and which is the worst.
    Sample Questions:
    • Jessica has always been a reliable employee in the past. Recently she has started arriving to work late and has started missing deadlines. So far this has not affected the rest of the team.
    • What are the best and worst ways to handle this situation?
    • Tell her she is in danger of being fired
    • Tell her you have noticed something seems wrong, and offer resources for employee assistance
    • Tell her she is being written up, and that she needs to separate her personal life from work
    • Have another employee find out what’s wrong
  • Prioritizing Daily Tasks – In this portion of the assessment, you will need to demonstrate how you prioritize tasks. There are only two questions on this test. Both questions will consist of a list of tasks and situations, and you will need to rank them in order of urgency.
    Example Questions:
    • Rank these by the level of priority. 1 being most urgent and needs to be handled immediately, and 4 being less urgent.
    • You catch an employee ignoring safety rules
    • Two employees are in an argument that has escalated to shouting
    • You have a telephone conference in 20 minutes
    • One of your employees says they urgently need to speak with you
  • Running Your Area – This will assess your ability to interpret data and read and analyze graphs. You will be given sample reports, similar to the ones you would use as an operations manager. You will have 8 questions to answer based on the information you will be given in the graphs.

Work-Style Assessment

The Work-Style assessment is personality-based. The questions will show the Amazon hiring team your work style. It will also show how well your work style adheres to the Amazon Leadership Principles.

  • Experience and Background – This is a 17-question section that delves into your professional background. Some questions will focus on details such as, “how long have you worked in this field?” Others will focus on your behaviors, “do you often give feedback about how things can be improved?”
  • Personality Survey – This is a 47-question personality assessment. You will be given two statements, and you will need to decide which one best describes you.
