What Is the Hiring Process for Capital One?

Capital One’s recruitment process reflects the high standard to which they hold their employees. It is a process comprised of several assessment stages, as well as multiple interviews in varied formats.

  1. Online Application
    The hiring process for Capital One begins with a simple online application, which is found on Capital One’s website. At this stage in the recruitment process, applicants will provide their education and employment history. The online application will also require you to upload a copy of your resume, and it is a good idea to upload a cover letter that explains why you are applying to Capital One and why you are applying to this position specifically.
  2. Web-Based Assessments
    The second step of the recruitment process is completing three online psychometric assessments. The second test is a verbal reasoning exam, which will assess the applicant’s aptitude for drawing logical conclusions based on written information. The numerical reasoning assessment is especially important in the hiring process and will require the applicant to draw logical conclusions based on visual representations of data (charts, graphs, etc.). Applicants to technical positions may also be required to complete a coding assessment.
  3. Phone Screening or Video Interview
    Applicants whose assessments suggest they will be a good fit with Capital One’s values will next be invited to schedule an initial screening interview. While it is possible this screening may be given as a video interview, common practice is to carry out this interview over the phone. Regardless of the format of the interview, questions in this interview will be aimed at verifying an applicant’s work history, availability, and salary expectations. Applicants may also be asked to take part in a short case study: they will be asked to briefly analyze a hypothetical situation and provide their recommendation on how to proceed.
  4. In-Person Interview
    Should an applicant’s phone or video screening go well, they will then be invited to schedule an in-person interview. This interview may take one of three forms: a one-on-one interview with a departmental manager, a panel interview with departmental managers and HR personnel, or as a group interview. Whether the in-person interview is one-on-one, a panel, or a group format, it will consist of two main parts: a behavioral interview and a case study. It is important to note that the case study that is part of the in-person interview will be much lengthier and more in-depth than the short case-study presented in the phone screening.
  5. Pre-Employment Checks and Onboarding Process
    The final stage in Capital One’s recruitment process includes a background check and may also include a credit check, depending on the location and position to which you have applied. Applicants who have been successful up to this point in the hiring process and whose background and credit checks are satisfactory will then begin the onboarding process. The onboarding process introduces new hires to the corporate culture of Capital One. During this process, new employees will also receive access to an onboarding website that provides resources and information regarding Capital One’s policies and procedures.

  • Situational Judgment and Behavioral Assessment (SJT)
    The behavioral assessment taken at the beginning of Capital One’s application process takes the form of a situational judgment test. The questions on this assessment present the test-taker with a hypothetical scenario wherein there is some conflict that needs to be resolved. Your task is to determine which of the given response options is the most appropriate for resolving that situation. Although there are no objectively right or wrong answers, Capital One recruiters will be looking for candidates whose answers reflect the values of Capital One and will want to see evidence of the characteristics they associate with their ideal candidate. As a result, it is a good idea to review the desired qualities listed above before taking their assessment.
  • Verbal Reasoning Assessment
    Capital One recruiters place a high value on good communication skills and comprehension of complex materials. Consequently, they will be most interested in applicants who show a high aptitude for verbal reasoning. The verbal aptitude exam will present the applicant with several short texts, followed by a concluding statement. Each question will require you to determine whether the concluding statement is true, false, or if its validity cannot be determined from the information given. It is important to remember that your answer must be based solely on the information provided; do not base your answer on your past experience or any other passages you may have read elsewhere.
  • Numerical Reasoning Assessment (Quantitative Assessment)
    Capital One’s numerical reasoning test holds a great deal of weight for recruiters. It is not all-important, but a candidate’s performance on this assessment is very useful in helping recruiters determine whether an applicant will be able to perform the duties of their role in a financial institution. The test consists of 30 questions, which you will have 35 minutes to complete. Questions will present test-takers with statistical tables, charts, and graphs. You will then be required to perform basic mathematical operations (addition, multiplication, etc.) or simple calculations (ratios, percentages, etc.). Some questions may instead present incomplete equations, which you will need to use mathematical reasoning to complete.
  • Coding Assessment
    Applicants for technical positions will also be asked to complete Capital One’s coding assessment. This test ensures that applicants who are greenlit for the next phase of the recruitment process have the technical skills necessary to perform the responsibilities of their prospective role. Questions on this exam primarily assess the test taker’s aptitude for coding algorithms, data structures, and solution design.
  • The Capitol One Glider Test
    This test was developed by Glider to help Capital One find qualified developers, data engineers, and programmers by testing their coding ability and problem-solving ability. The test is an hour long and consists of coding simulations, that are typical of what a data engineer or programmer would have to handle on the job.  Depending on the specific position, some of the simulations will have you working with JavaScript, debugging configuration, or doing general programming tasks. Glider tests use a raking system that compares the test-takers to a set of preferred criteria provided by Capital One. This will help them pick the candidate that they feel will best fill the role.

What Questions Might Be Asked During the Interview?

While video interviews or phone screenings will focus more on an applicant’s previous experience and approach toward their work, in-person interviews will be more concerned with the job seeker’s behavioral and ethical characteristics. How to Pass Capital One Assessment Test?

There is no need to be overly concerned about how you will pass the online job assessments for Capital One. The best way to prepare for these assessments is simply to practice taking them. Practicing the verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning tests will give you the opportunity to preview the style of questioning you will see on Capital One’s assessments. Additionally, practice will familiarize you with the wording of the texts and questions. As for the coding assessment, there is evidence that practicing as few as 10-20 coding exercises will increase your chances of passing Capital One’s coding test by 50%.
