Caterpillar’s Psychometric Tests
Like many companies, Caterpillar includes online assessments as part of its hiring process. These tests will aid in selecting the candidates who have the best-developed skills for the job. There are several tests that are commonly used by Caterpillar:
The Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test – This test is given to those who will be working in engineering or in positions that require mechanical knowledge. The BMCT test is 55 questions long and covers areas of comprehension including force and momentum, velocity, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and wheels and pulleys. This test is timed, and you will be given 25 minutes to complete it.
Situational Judgment Test – The SJT is used to help predict how successful applicants will be in their desired role. The test is made up of common workplace occurrences, followed by several suggestions of resolutions. You will need to pick the resolution you feel will be the most effective. This test is not timed, and it typically only takes around 15 minutes to complete.
Personality Test – These are often given with situational judgment tests. They are used to show your dominant personality traits as a predictor of workplace behavior. You will be asked to rank a series of statements as being most or least like you.
Interviews
Interviews start out with a telephone screening. This is a chance for the recruiter to get to know you. They will tell you more about the position and what to expect. This is a great opportunity for you to ask questions and try to learn more about Caterpillar. Your next interview could be face to face or may be done over Skype. This interview will focus on technical and behavioral questions and depending on the job you are interviewing for may be done with more than one manager. This interview will be done using the STAR method for behavioral questions. You will be asked to describe a situation in which you once had to complete a task or handle a conflict, you will describe the task, explain the steps you took to complete the task or resolve the conflict, and describe the result. This method of interviewing gives the interviewer a better understanding of how you work than basic questions that can be answered in one word.
How to Prepare for Caterpillar’s Assessments?
Before taking the online assessment, tests make sure you have studied the skills you might need to demonstrate. If you are going into an engineering position or a position that requires mechanical knowledge, study your basic physics concepts. Use your old textbooks or study guides to review. Find a way to quiz yourself so you can track your progress.
Be honest on personality and situational judgment tests. On behavioral tests, there are no wrong answers. There are answers that are more appropriate in a professional setting, however. Imagine you are already an employee as you read the questions and answers and respond as though you are on the job.
If you want to become part of the largest construction manufacturing company in the world, there are numerous opportunities available with Caterpillar. Study for the assessment tests so you know your scores will reflect your skills, and you will find yourself accepting a job offer.
