ECOMM Test Online Preparation – 2025

Pre-Employment Tests

The ECOMM exam is a popular option for employers seeking to hire employees to work as emergency dispatchers. The test has gained that popularity because they help employers to reduce cost and hiring time, lower turnover, lower stress, and lower adverse impact due to wrong calls on who to hire. This makes them an attractive choice, and if you have applied for a position as a dispatcher, the chances are high you will be asked to take an ECOMM exam.

What Is the ECOMM Test?

The ECOMM national exam is a test designed for those seeking employment as emergency dispatchers in a variety of job atmospheres. It allows employers to understand how well-suited the candidate really is for working as a dispatcher, what skills they already possess, and whether they can handle the job.

Unlike some tests that can be used for a variety of emergency responders, this test is designed specifically for emergency communications operators. The test is produced by Ergometrics.

What to Expect on the ECOMM?

ECOMM has three different tests that make up the entire ECOMM national assessment. Each test covers a different topic and looks at the candidate’s skills and ability from a variety of angles. The question types also vary from test-to-test, and each test typically includes a variety of question types.

  • CallTaker Video Test: the first of the tests is focused on the candidate’s ability to handle calls. The job-seeker or graduate listens to simulated calls intended to lead them to critical decision-making moments. They then proceed to choose the action they feel is the best course of action. The test covers computer simulations and information processing, data entry, active listening, listening and communication skills, public relations and internal or team relations, prioritization and analysis to problem-solve, responsibility for officer safety, and stress management.
  • Recording Pertinent Information Test: This portion of the test focuses on the candidate’s ability to record vital information. As such, it assesses aptitude for multi-tasking, attention to detail, and recording accuracy.
  • Dispatcher Test: This last one assesses job-related skills in the candidates. It requires dispatchers, 911 operators and dispatchers, and public safety operators to multitask in order to solve problems, analyze data, prioritize calls, and follow directions.

How to Prepare for a ECOMM Exam?

Preparation for the ECOMM can be difficult simply because the test is focused on personality as well as knowledge. While it may not be entirely possible to prepare for the questions that want to understand the candidate’s mindset or personality, preparing for the other sections is within reach.

The first area that candidates new to the emergency communications scene may struggle with tends to be radio codes and abbreviations. You should study these closely if you are one of those individuals who knows only the bare minimum about the terminology used on the job.

The test is heavy on the areas of decision making, summarizing information, prioritization of tasks and calls, memory recall, data entry, and cross-referencing. If any of these areas are week, practice them. You will need them all.

Finally, as with any test, you should practice before hand. Even if you cannot access a  course to prepare, there are many free online resources that you should take advantage of to ensure you are properly prepared. This will reduce test anxiety and stress.

Conclusion

The tests in the ECOMM can feel daunting simply because of their wide reach over a variety of topic areas and their difficulty. But they are possible to prepare for, and they are there to ensure that those who would be better off not working emergency dispatch do not end up in that position. Prepare to the best of your ability, then take a deep breath and take the test with confidence.
