Epic Systems Assessment Tests, Hiring Process & Interviews Online Preparation – 2025
What Is Epic Systems?
Epic Systems is a software engineering company based in Madison, Wisconsin that provides coding services to various American healthcare organizations. Alongside serving its clients, Epic Systems also prioritizes facilitating an equitable and diverse work environment for its 10,000 employees. The company’s campus includes a highly-esteemed kitchen, multiple athletic clubs, and numerous other systems that encourage a strong sense of community among coworkers. Epic Systems’ employees receive paid vacation, paid sabbaticals, health insurance, merit-based compensation/stock, educational opportunities, and on-site services (such as oil changes and dry cleaning). Employees also have the ability to travel while providing services to various sites around the country.
The types of jobs available at Epic Systems vary widely; positions include software engineers, developers, technicians, administrators, company attorneys, project and quality managers, translators, mechanics, etc. There are also positions for the campus’ culinary crew, such as chefs, nutrition specialists, bakers, baristas, and more.
What Is Epic Systems’ Recruitment Process?
To begin the hiring process, prospective employees submit an application and resume on Epic Systems’ website. Individuals may also apply by referral or recruitment. After this stage, applicants undergo a telephone interview with Epic Systems’ HR department. Then, depending on the applicant and position, the company usually requires individuals to take one or more pre-employment tests, including the Wonderlic Personnel Test (now called the Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test), the SJT, and the Epic Systems Technical Skills Assessment (given by ProctorU online). Both the Wonderlic Test and the Epic Systems Skills Assessment include personality tests. Finally, if both the phone interview and the assessments go well, the applicant undergoes another interview either one-on-one or alongside other applicants. This interview often occurs in person. Alongside the managers, regular workers (prospective co-workers) often help run interviews, too.
Psychometric Tests
As stated above, depending on the desired position, an applicant must take one or more of the following assessments.
- Wonderlic Personnel Test (Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test) – This test has three sections, and all measure a different aspect: aptitude, personality, and motivation. This exam is timed, so applicants have to move quickly. The aptitude section has 50 questions, and the time limit is 12 minutes. The personality section follows the Five Factor Model, which measures extraversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism, and the motivation section has 58 questions that must be answered in 10-15 minutes.
- SJT (Situational Judgment Test) – This test measures what judgment calls candidates would make given specific workplace situations. These tests often regard conflict resolution, customer service, quality management, and so on.
- Technical Skills Assessment – This test is considered the hardest part of the entire application process, and most of the screening occurs here. The psychometrics measure the applicant’s skills with algebra (and other relevant mathematics/sciences pertaining to software engineering), word problems, reasoning elements, and verbal comprehension elements. In other words, it is a more intense and detailed aptitude test that Epic Systems designed specifically for their own company. The exam is proctored (via your webcam), and it is untimed. However, the exam often takes 3-4 hours to complete, and you are not able to leave at any time (so use the bathroom beforehand). There are three sections—English, Math, and Programming. In other words, even though the job is software engineering, being proficient at mathematics is not enough; you must have strong reading comprehension, as well.
Examples of Common Interview Questions
For the various interviews, you can expect questions regarding the following topics:
- Your prior experience working with software engineering (or whatever job you are applying for)
- Your interests/skills that set you apart from other candidates
- Your questions/curiosities about the company
- How you might solve algorithmic problems or unexpected issues
- Why you decided to pursue a job at Epic Systems
How to Prepare for Epic Systems’ Assessments?
The following tips will guide you through your preparation. The most important part of the application process to prepare for is the Epic Systems Technical Skills Assessment. Assume that preparation for this test will be the difference between you moving to the next stage and being turned away. Serious applicants must study and prepare for all sections by practicing, studying, and researching all relevant materials and skills. For this test and the Wonderlic Test, we recommend taking free practice assessments, which we include on our website. Completing sample questions will help you immensely.
The SJT test cannot be overshadowed, however. While it is less specialized, it is important to know the personal characteristics and judgment skills that Epic Systems values. Among others, these include flexibility, compassion, openness, communicativeness, and conscientiousness.
For the interviews, it is best to come prepared with thorough knowledge regarding your own resume and experiences. With this, have answers and explanations prepared regarding why you are interested in Epic Systems, how you see yourself working with them long-term, and what characteristics make you a worthy candidate. Have questions ready for the interviewer in return—they will ask you if you have any, and having questions lets them know you care about your own understanding of and compatibility with the company.
