Florida Power and Light (FPL) is the largest power provider in the state of Florida. Based in Juno Beach, they serve about 5, 145 225 customers. It is the main subsidiary of NextEra Energy Co. Another of Florida’s energy providers, Golf Power Company was acquired by NextEra and merged into FPL in 2021. This expanded the service area of FPL into northwest Florida.

Positions at FPL range from corporate office positions, accounting, and IT, to careers in chemistry, engineering, and nuclear science, and skilled trade careers in electricity and nuclear power. What Is Florida Power and Light’s Recruitment Process?

If you are interested in a job with FPL, you can use their website to see if there are any openings that match your qualifications. You will need to meet all the required qualifications to get the attention of recruiters, but try to find positions where you meet at least one of the preferred qualifications. This will improve your odds of being contacted. Include an updated resume when you submit your application, the NextEra website has a page that describes their ideal resume.

After your application has been reviewed, you will be contacted for a telephone screening interview. This interview usually takes around 30 minutes and is a good time for you to ask any question you have about the position. You will be sent links to any online tests that will be required. Some jobs may have physical requirements, if that is the case with the job you have applied for, you will be scheduled to take these at the company testing center. You may have two or more in-person interviews depending on your desired job. Some candidates may have panel interviews with several management team members.

 

FPL Psychometric Tests

If you have applied for a technical position the tests you take will be to demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge to succeed. These psychimetric tests that are used were developed by The Edison Electrical Institute specifically for the power industry.

EEI CAST Test

The CAST (Construction and Skilled Trade Selection System) test is for skilled tradesmen applying for positions with utility companies.

  • Graphic Arithmetic – This multiple-choice test measures your ability to perform arithmetic using the information that is provided to you in two drawings. There are 26 questions to answer with a 30-minute time limit.
  • Mechanical Concepts Assessment Here you will be assessed on your knowledge of basic mechanics. Each question will focus on a mechanical problem involving basic machineries like gears and levers. There are 44 multiple choice questions here, which you will have 2o minutes to answer.
  • Reading For Comprehension You will have 4 brief paragraphs to read, followed by 32 questions. The passages will focus on information regarding safety in the power industry. This test is to show that you have the ability to understand written information. There is a time limit of 30 minutes.
  • Mathematical Usage This is a basic arithmetic test. There are 18 multiple-choice questions that you will need to solve in 30 minutes.

 

EEI POSS/MASS Test

This is a combined test given to those who will be working in a power plant as an operator, or doing plant maintenance. The areas you will be tested in are very similar to those of the CAST test.

  • Reading Comprehension You will have 36 questions to answer based on 5 short passages. You have a time limit of 30 minutes.
  • Mathematical Usage Depending on the level of the job you applied for, there will be either 18 or 46 arithmetic questions to answer. The 18-question version gives you a time limit of 7 minutes. You will have 17 minutes for the 46-question test.
  • Mechanical Concepts This focuses on your understanding of basic machinery. You will have 44 questions to answer, based on problems pictured in drawings of gears, levers, and pulleys. You will have 20 minutes to solve the problems.
  • Tables and Graphs – Here you will show how well you are able to use tables and graphs. There are 2 sections. The first is 60 questions you must answer within 5 minutes. The second is 24 questions you will have 5 minutes to answer.
  • Spatial Ability (Figurative Reasoning) – This test will have pictures of disassembled machinery. You will need to be able to tell what each piece does and understand how it all goes together. There are 20 questions, and a time limit of 10 minutes.

EEI TECH Test

The TECH (technical operations assessment system) test is made up of 4 short assessments. This is focused on new graduates from mathematical engineering, chemistry, and mechanical engineering programs who are trying to get their first positions in energy. The entire test will take about an hour.

  • Reasoning From Rules – This measures how well you can interpret and apply rules to solve logic network problems. You will have 9 minutes to answer 9 questions.
  • Graphic Problem Solving – There will be 21 arithmetic problems, represented as drawing that you will need to solve in 19 minutes.
  • Interpreting Diagrams – The information on a diagram will be represented by symbols, you will need to be able to identify what they mean to answer the questions. You will have 9 minutes to answer all 9 questions.
  • Mechanical Concepts There will be pictures representing a mechanical issue. You will need to be able to determine what is being illustrated and pick the correct description. This is the longest section at 44 questions, and you will have 20 minutes to complete it.

EEI tests are industry specific, so studying for them is important. You will need to be well versed in basic mechanics, so refreshing yourself on these concepts is a must. Practice basic arithmetic, and time yourself so you can work on solving problems quickly, methods like flash cards can be effective for working on your speed.
