What Is McCann Public Safety Exam?

McCann Associates provides several different exams for public safety officers. There is one basic test given to both potential police officers and fire-fighters, and a set of separate exams designed specifically for each department. McCann has been designing tests for over 20 years and is a leader in the industry. They are a part of the Vantage Labs group, and they provide tests for a number of different industries, including higher education, and the government.

The McCann Measured Success Test

The McCann Measured Success test is a standardized test designed to measure the basic competencies, behavior, and work ethic needed to successfully function as a law enforcement officer or firefighter. This exam is computer-based and consists of several subjects.

  • Interpreting text material
  • Reasoning ability
  • Observation
  • Map reading

The McCann Entry Level Police Exam

The police exam is designed specifically to identify the perfect candidates for law enforcement positions. There are two sections to the test, and no experience is needed to do well. Good judgment and common sense will help point you to the correct answers.

Incorrect answers on the test will not be penalized, and you will only be scored on the number of correct answers.

Section I

This section will focus on your memory and observational skills. Being able to recall details of a crime or accident scene is an important part of police work. You will be given a picture to study. The picture will be removed and you will need to recall as many of the details as possible. You will also need to attempt to draw logical conclusions from the things you can recall. This section is made up of 30 questions, and you will have 25 minutes to complete it.

Section II

Section II focuses on observation, judgment, and reasoning. In the field, you will need to be able to make quick judgments and be able to come to reasonable conclusions on very little information. There are 70 questions. For 59 of the questions will be given a scenario, and you will need to select the best answer from a group of 5. There will also be 11 reading comprehension questions included in this section. You will have 2 hours to complete this section of the test.

The McCann Entry-Level Firefighters Exam

The firefighters’ exam is 2 hours long and made up of 100 questions. These questions will revolve around skills that are necessary to succeed as a firefighter, such as the ability to recall the layout of a building, good reading comprehension skills, and the ability to make a quick decision. The subjects included in the tests include:

Some of the questions on the firefighter exam include reading interpretation, graphs, and mechanical aptitude.

How to Prepare for the McCann Public Safety Exams?

To prepare for the exams, it would be in your best interest to get a study guide for the test. Many departments will give candidates a study guide, but you can also find them online. The study guide will prepare you for the types of questions you can expect on the exam. Familiarity with the format will make it less stressful on the day of the test. Read the test guidelines carefully, so you know if you are allowed to bring a calculator. You will most likely not be allowed to bring your cell phone, and you will need to bring the test approval letter.

If you use the resources provided to you, the exams will only be a bump in the road to your public safety career.
