Aptitude Tests Preparation

What Is the paragraph organization test?

The paragraph organization test is a type of a verbal reasoning aptitude test that measures your ability to place sentences in the order that makes the most sense. You will be given a series of numbered (or lettered) sentences that all make up a paragraph, but they are out of order. You must identify the answer choice which includes the correct sequences of numbers/letters that correspond to the sentences within the paragraph organization test.

How to Prepare for the Paragraph Organization Test

A paragraph organization test assesses your ability to arrange sentences or paragraphs in a logical and coherent manner. To succeed in a paragraph organization test, follow these tips:

  • Identify the Main Idea: For each paragraph or set of sentences, identify the main idea or topic. This will help you establish a central theme around which to organize the rest of the information.
  • Analyze the Content: Carefully read and analyze the sentences or paragraphs you are given in the paragraph organization test. Consider the relationship between each sentence and how they contribute to the main idea. Look for logical connections, cause-and-effect relationships, and chronological sequences.
  • Establish a Clear Structure: Begin by placing the most important or introductory information at the beginning. Arrange subsequent sentences or paragraphs in a logical order, focusing on a smooth transition between ideas. Consider using transitional words or phrases to link thoughts together.
  • Check for Cohesion: As you rearrange the sentences, ensure that each one naturally leads to the next. Check for coherence in terms of subject matter, tense, and tone. Avoid abrupt shifts that could confuse the reader.
  • Practice Time Management: During the test, manage your time wisely. Allocate a specific amount of time for each paragraph or set of sentences. If you get stuck on one section, move on and return to it later if time permits. Remember, practice is key to improving your paragraph organization skills. Engage in exercises and practice tests to refine your ability to structure information logically and coherently. Over time, you will become more proficient in organizing paragraphs effectively, both in academic settings and real-world communication.

Paragraph Organization Test Example Question

Now that we have gone over preparation for the paragraph organization test, let us take an in-depth look at a sample question.

Arrange the following sentences to create a coherent paragraph.

  1. He researched various destinations and created a detailed itinerary.
  2. After months of planning, John embarked on his dream vacation.
  3. Exploring ancient ruins and savoring local cuisine were the highlights.
  4. His excitement grew as he boarded the plane and left his worries behind.
  5. During the trip, he captured breathtaking landscapes with his camera.

  1. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
  2. 4, 5, 3, 2, 1
  3. 1, 2, 4, 3, 5
  4. 3, 5, 2, 1, 5

Answer: The correct answer is C. The only sentences that need to be switched are 3 and 4 due to 4 logically being stated before 3 (he boarded the plane and then explored ruins and enjoyed the local cuisine). The rest of the sentences can be left alone, thankfully!

It is important to note that while the paragraph could be grammatically improved with some conjunctions and fewer sentences to make it less choppy, the point of this assessment is to test your ability to put things in the most logical order. If it helps you, you can imagine that the sentences are made to flow more easily together rather than focusing on whether or not they sound choppy. With the above example, noting the tone can also be helpful. The tone in this case is meant to sound quite dramatic, which we can see within the use of adjectives like “savoring” and “breathtaking.”
