What Is Philip Morris International’s Recruitment Process?

Like most multi-national conglomerates, Philip Morris International has a multi-layered approach to employing its staff. Below we will discuss the process in depth and offer some tips and tricks to give you the best possible chance of making it through the screening process and securing a position at Philip Morris International.

Online Application

Depending on your particular skill set, the first step in your journey towards a career with Philip Morris International will be either to register your interest with the online talent community or search for opportunities via the global job hub.

At this point, you will be required to upload a current resume, enter personal information (including your work experience and education/graduate history) and your gender/nationality (this is for equal opportunity purposes).

PMI’s Psychometric Tests

The assessment portion of the process will occur if Philip Morris International decides your resume warrants you progressing to the next stage. An online aptitude test will take place to determine your suitability for the role suggested. There are five styles of test offered by three providers (SHL, Hogan, and Saville) that you may need to undertake to progress to the next stage in your application process. We will explore each of them below:

  • Numerical Reasoning TestsDesigned to test your numerical aptitude in a business setting, you can expect to see questions ranging from general arithmetic to interpretation of graphs and application of logic to worded questions. You will have to show your ability to use logic in order to solve mathematical conundrums, so it is highly recommended that you practice repeatedly before attempting the actual test.
  • Verbal Reasoning Tests Similar in principle to the numerical reasoning test, the VRT seeks to assess your ability to think critically. You will be provided with written business scenarios that are complex in nature and a statement about said scenarios – you will have to decide whether this statement is true or false. Like all tests involved, you will only be given a certain amount of time to answer – approximately one minute per question.
  • Inductive Reasoning Test This section will test your ability to think logically by having you analyze a variety of patterns and shapes and deduce the next step by working out the sequence at play. Again, if you are not already confident in your ability to succeed at this particular test, we recommend you practice at home beforehand.
  • Error Checking TestYour ability to examine images, texts, and numbers and highlight any errors will be examined here. The goal of this test is to be able to identify the slightest of errors and report them accordingly.
  • Hogan Personality Test This personality test is difficult to prepare for as it is designed to ensure your inherent values and beliefs are in line with that of Philip Morris International. Provided you are applying for the right position for your abilities and have read up on Philip Morris International to ensure you share their vision, this test should not pose a major problem as there are no right or wrong answers per se. The best preparation for this test is to use practice tests and materials to get a feel for the style of test so that you are able to convey your personality traits and values accurately.

Interview

Depending on your location, you will receive a request to interview in person or by way of online video link as the next step of the recruiting process. This stage is to determine your suitability to work at Philip Morris International. The tobacco industry tends to be a divisive topic in the general community, so it is important at this stage to register your investment in Philip Morris International’s goals and your interest in their smoke-free initiatives. While every interview will be determined by both the interviewer and the subject, there will be a general format followed.

Potential interview questions include:

  • What do you know about Philip Morris International?
  • What about working with Philip Morris International would you dislike?
  • How do you see your career progressing in five years time?
  • What areas do you believe could be improved within Philip Morris International?
  • Discuss a time when your work was criticized and your response to it.
  • Tell us about a time in which you were in a leadership position and how you effectively managed others.
  • What is the most difficult situation you have had to deal with in a previous workplace?

If you can, organize a practice interview with a friend or colleague to ensure you are as prepared as possible. Devise answers in advance but be sure you are able to adapt when necessary.

Case Study Presentation

If the interviewer is pleased with your performance, you will move on to the final round involved in the hiring process – the case study presentation. You will be given a business scenario and several possible resolutions. You will need to select the solution you deem to the be most worthy and provide reasons behind your choice to a panel, who will let you know at the conclusion of your presentation whether or not you have been successful.
