What Is Sempra Energy’s Recruitment Process?

If you wish to work with any of the Sempra companies, you need to submit your application online. All open positions are listed on the main Sempra website or through the subsidiary company’s site. If you do not see a position that matches your qualifications you can sign up to be alerted when a position becomes available. After it is submitted your application will be reviewed to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications. Your application is more likely to attract attention if you meet some of the preferred qualifications as well. If your application seems promising you will be contacted for a telephone screening. If your screening seems positive, you will be scheduled for pre-employment assessments and an in-person interview. The testing and interview process may take one to two days. Interviews are done panel style. Your interview will be conducted with anywhere from two to five people. The interview questions will be a mix of behavior and competency-based questions done in the SHARE style (Situation, hindrance, action, results, evaluate). This interview style is similar to the STAR style interview. If you pass the tests and impress during your interview, you will be given a conditional offer. Before becoming an official employee, a background check will be conducted. This will consist of a criminal history check, social security check, vehicle history, education verification, and employment verification.

Sempra’s Pre-Hire Assessments

Some positions require testing before you can move forward with an interview. The test you are given depends on the job you applied for. The tests are designed to measure the knowledge and abilities necessary for specific jobs. Human resources will let you know which test you will be given so you have time to prepare for it.

  • Blue Test Battery – This test focuses on mechanical aptitude. The test has four timed sections. You will be tested on Visual Speed and Accuracy (minutes to identify as many pairs as possible), Computation (5 minutes to complete as many arithmetic problems as you can), Mechanical Comprehension (36 questions 20-minute time limit), and Symbolic Reasoning (30 questions, 5-minute time limit). The questions on each test section are multiple-choice, and you are allowed to go back to complete anything you may have skipped if you are still within your time limit.
  • Green Test Battery – This assessment is for job-seekers who have applied for administrative positions. The areas you will be tested on are Reasoning (30 items, 5-minute-time limit), tomprehension ( 23 qrstions, 10-minute time limit), and Problem Solving ( 25 questions, 10-minute time limit). The test questions are multiple-choice and true or false. You can go back to review questions you have skipped if you still have time at the end of each section.
  • Red Test Battery – This is the series of tests you will be given if you have applied for a technical or engineering position. The four test areas on the Red battery are Mechanical Comprehension (36 questions, 20-minute time limit), Symbolic Reasoning ( 30 questions, 5-minute time limit), Reading Comprehension (10 minutes, 23-minute time limit), and Problem Solving ( 25 questions, 10-minute time limit). The questions are all either multiple-choice or true or false.
  • Yellow Test Battery – If you are testing for a clerical, meter reading, or customer service position, this is the test battery you will need to study for. The competencies you will be tested on are Following Written Directions ( 24 questions, 5-minute time limit), Language Skills ( 25 questions, 5-minute time limit), Coding ( 72 questions, 5-minute time limit), and Computation (5 minutes to answer as many questions as possible). The tests in this battery are all multiple-choice, or true or false questions. You can go back to review items you may have missed if you still have time left.
  • Physical Test Battery – If the job you are hoping for requires physical stamina, you will be required to take this test. You will need to demonstrate arm strength, abdominal strength and endurance, and trunk strength.

How to Prepare for Sempra’s Assessments?

Sempra makes preparing for their rest batteries a little easier by letting you know which battery of tests to prepare for. With this information, you can access the study guides that are available for these tests. The study guides will tell you which areas you should focus on, and provide sample questions so you have an idea of what to expect. The stress of working under a time limit is part of what makes these tests seem difficult. Answer sample questions like those in the study guides, and set a timer so you can get used to the feeling of working while timed. Some of the test areas have a lot of questions to answer in a short time frame. Do not spend too long working on one problem and run out of time, but do not make random guesses either. If you can, use the process of elimination to make an educated guess, and move on to the next question. This is a skill you can easily practice so you are confident on test day.
