Telestra’s Psychometric Tests

If your application makes an impression you will be contacted to take the Telstra online aptitude tests. You will be sent a link and will have to take them within a certain time frame. The assessment tests routinely sent to applicants, both graduate scheme and traditional hires, are:

  • The Telstra Cognitive Reasoning Assessment – Provided by Revelian, this test is designed to test three different types of reasoning. In no particular order, you will be given questions to test your verbal, numerical, and abstract reasoning.
Verbal reasoning questions are used to test your vocabulary and basic language skills. You will be given 2 words and must determine if they are similar, or different.
Numerical reasoning tests your basic arithmetic skills. Some questions may be presented as finishing a sequence, and some will require you to determine the basic function used to get the answer to a short equation.
Abstract reasoning is a measure of how well you process and interpret non-verbal or non-numerical information. This test presents the test taker with a series of shapes and sequences, and you must figure out how to complete the sequence.
You will have 20 minutes to complete all 51 questions on the test.
  • Situational Judgment Test (SJT) The situational judgment test is a psychometric test that presents you with work-related situations multiple responses to pick from. You must pick the one that best suits how you would resolve the issue. This test is used to help the recruiting team see how you handle making decisions and problem-solving.
  • Hogan’s Matrigma Test The Matrigma assessment measures general mental ability. It measures fluid mental ability. There are 35 questions that you will have 40 minutes to answer. The questions are non-verbal, you are presented with a series of matrices in which you must complete the pattern. The test requires you to be able to decipher the relationship between each shape in the matrix and determine what dictates the next step in the sequence. Some versions are adaptive, and each question builds in difficulty based on the previous ones.

Video Interview

If your scores on the assessment tests meet the criteria required by the Telstra hiring team you will be contacted to complete a video interview. You will be sent the questions you need to answer. The video interview will consist of both behavioral and experience related questions, this interview is meant to help the recruiting team get a better idea of your personality and qualifications. Try your best not to read your answers or sound scripted. The Telstra hiring team wants to see your personality shine through. Video interviews may also be given to overseas applicants who cannot be present for a face to face interview. Once you receive the invitation to interview, you will have 72 hours to complete it. There are 7 questions, and it will take about 1 hour to finish. You will have 3 chances to record your answer to each question. Prior to recording your interview, double-check that your computer monitor, and camera are in the optimum position and that your microphone is working correctly.

Telestra’s Assessment Center

Some applicants, such as those for graduate scheme programs will be asked to come in and take part in an assessment center. The assessment center consists of two activities and culminates in a face to face interview. The Assessment center gives the hiring team a chance to gauge how well you perform in a professional setting. This is the first chance they will have to see how well you interact as part of a team, and if you truly have the traits they are looking for in an employee.

  • Case Study You will be given a packet with information concerning a problem that relates to the job you have applied for. You must describe the problem and find a solution. You will then present this to the assessor’s panel for evaluation. You will have 25 minutes to prepare, and your presentation must last between 3-5 minutes. The panel will be using this to determine how well you communicate your ideas, your skill at disseminating information, and how well you perform under pressure.
  • Group Discussion For the group discussion you will work with other applicants discussing a topic that you will be provided with by the assessment team. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate your team-working abilities and leadership skills. You will be gauged on how well you listen to the ideas presented by others, contribute to the discussion, and help draw ideas out of less dominant team members. During group discussion, the assessors will be taking notes on which participants contribute, which speak over the quieter participants, and which effectively draw the best out of others in the group.

Face to Face Interview

The final step in the hiring process is the face to face interview. These can last from 45 minutes to an hour and will focus on behavior questions with a few competency and technical questions. Familiarizing yourself with the Telstra’s core values and mission will help you anticipate the types of questions you may be asked. Present your answers using the C.A.R.E method. The C.A.R.E method is very similar to the STAR method. It explains the context of a situation, the action you performed, the results of your action, and evidence, what was the impact your actions had.  This will ensure you answer the questions thoroughly and help illustrate why you are perfect for the position. There are some questions you should be prepared for:

  • How do you face challenges that get in the way of your goals?
  • How have you demonstrated leadership in the past?
  • Can you quickly familiarize yourself with new technology?
  • What skills do you bring to the table, and why do you think you are a good fit for Telstra? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
