What Is Westchester County’s Civil Service Hiring Process?

Application

Civil service applications in Westchester County are available online. They are listed by job type in the job-seekers section of the government website. Applications are in pdf form and will need to be downloaded. Some applications will have a deadline. They must be submitted by, so candidates can take the scheduled exams. Some jobs are considered open, and exams are held continuously.

 

Westchester County’s Civil Service Tests

Civil service exams in Westchester County are developed by the New York State Civil Service Commission, which regulates all civil service tests in the state of New York. The Westchester County exams are targeted to the job being tested for. For this reason, there are numerous variations of the exams that are offered. The exams come in several different formats. There may be written exams,  performance exams, or exams administered by computer. Written exams are multiple-choice and will require a number 2 pencil to fill in the answer sheet. Basic digital calculators are allowed unless you are told otherwise. Performance exams test skills such as data entry, recall, coding, and typing.  There are four types of civil service exams which are classified by how the job is listed:

  • Open-Competitive Examination – These are open to any candidate who meets the minimum job requirements for the job listing.
  • Promotional Examination – These are only open to current employees of the department that is hiring.
  • Continuous Recruitment Examination – These exams are for jobs with no application deadline, that are continuously testing candidates to add to an eligibility list. Candidates who pass the exams for these jobs remain on the list for one year.
  • Training and Experience Examination – There is no actual test involved. A score is given based on the information on the application. Their education will be compared to their experience to determine a final score.

 

Interviews

Applicants who are able to make it to the interview stage should expect a rigorous interview. They will want to know your motivations for applying for a certain department, where you see your career going, and what you know about the job. They will want to hire people who can demonstrate that they are an asset to the organization, who will grow with the job, and who can work with the existing team to keep things running smoothly.

 

How to Prepare for Westchester County Civil Service Tests?

If you want your name to make it onto the eligibility list, you will need to go into the civil service test prepared. Study all the job requirements, and carefully read the test administration materials you will be provided with. If you know you will have to take a performance test, practice the skills that are likely to be tested. When you arrive at the testing location and receive your test booklet, double-check to ensure you have the correct test materials. Review all the questions carefully before answering to prevent careless errors. After taking the exams, remember that Westchester County and the New York Department of Civil Service take a hard stance against sharing the content of the test. Discussing the test with other candidates after you have taken it may result in being disqualified from civil service exams for five years. The Westchester County civil service exams are difficult but with careful study and patience, you can pass the exams and begin your career in civil service.
